This ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan, and Improve (DPI) course provides individuals with the practical skills necessary to create a 'learning and improving' IT (Information Technology) organization with a strong and effective strategic direction. It covers the influence and impact of Agile and Lean ways of working and how they can be leveraged to an organization's advantage. It will provide practitioners with a practical and strategic method for planning and delivering continual improvement with the necessary agility.

The course prepares you for the ITIL® 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan & Improve exam. This crossover exam fulfills a core requirement of the ITIL 4 Managing Professional (MP) and Strategic Leader (SL) certifications.

In this course, you will learn how to:

  • Understand and know how to use the key principles and methods of continual improvement for all types of improvements.
  • Understand and know how to use the key principles and methods of Communication and Organizational Change Management to direction, planning and improvement.
  • Understand and know how to use the key principles and methods of measurement and reporting in direction, planning and improvement.

Training Prerequisites

You must hold the ITIL 4 Foundation Certificate (see Learning Tree course 1199, ITIL® 4 Foundation Training).

ITIL 4 Strategist DPI Training FAQs

ITIL 4 Strategist Direct Plan and Improve is aimed at managers of all levels involved in shaping direction and strategy or developing a continually improving team. It will cover both practical and strategic elements.

Before your event, you will be sent an electronic Pre-Course Study Guide and the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Direct, Plan and Improve book, which you should read as part of the 21 hours of personal study.

The ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (SL) designation is made up of two courses: 

  • Learning Tree Course 1282, ITIL® 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan, and Improve Training
  • Learning Tree Course 1285, ITIL® 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy Training

If you have not yet achieved the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, you need to take both courses listed above and pass the related exams to earn the ITIL 4 Strategic Leader designation. 

If you have already achieved the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, whether you earned it by working through the necessary ITIL 4 modules or with the ITIL 4 Transition module, you would only need to complete Course 1285, ITIL® 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy Training, and pass the related exam to achieve the ITIL 4 Strategic Leader designation.

Once you have ITIL 4 Foundation certification, this crossover course fulfills a core requirement for one of the four ITIL 4 Managing Professional core requirements and one of the two Strategic Leader certification requirements.

You will be provided with an exam voucher for each exam and a link to register and schedule your online exam sessions with the PeopleCert web proctoring service. You will take your exams after you have completed your training course. Visit the PeopleCert website for more information on the logistics of taking your web-proctored exam with PeopleCert.

For publicly scheduled course events, Learning Tree will set up the Take2 option for all attendees when we order your exam voucher. If you aren’t successful on your first exam, you will be notified by PeopleCert that you are eligible to register for the exam retake.

Though exam vouchers can cost hundreds, there is no additional cost to you to sign up for the Take2 re-sit program. Take2 is an additional complimentary benefit offered to you by Learning Tree.

Yes, you must re-sit the exam within six months of your initial exam.
